As far back as 2001, human rights organisations were already <https://substack.com/redirect/b029d301-d91f-4d87-bc22-64808d3dac14?j=eyJ1Ij…> reporting that Hamas had recruited 15-year-olds, with 12 being the youngest recorded age. Public argument about Gaza speaks constantly about civilians, often at a distance from the people enduring the war. This video records Gazans interviewed in recent weeks describing their own experiences of Hamas. They speak of discovering that Hamas had lied to them. Their accounts describe children being recruited with money and false promises, under the shadow of armed coercion. In the system they portray, a child’s life is expendable. Their testimony suggests a strong practical link between disarmament and deradicalisation. So long as Hamas retains armed control, the teachers and preachers who sustain its recruitment system can operate under the organisation’s protection. Any attempt to reform education will remain vulnerable while that machinery retains coercive force. Disarming Hamas is a civilian necessity, though carrying it out is exceptionally difficult. Gaza’s children remain at risk while an armed organisation can indoctrinate and recruit them in service of its own survival. I have examined the practical obstacles to the Gaza ceasefire in depth, in an extensive three-part series ( <https://substack.com/redirect/bc6d9064-0b84-4e65-b601-6748976cd5c2?j=eyJ1Ij…> here). Ahmad Fouad Alkhatib <https://substack.com/redirect/890714f7-4f9f-4458-bf24-97f14735d3dc?j=eyJ1Ij…> drew attention on X this week to an appalling video of a child being sent into harm’s way. Gabriel Epstein has <https://substack.com/redirect/2e90bb16-f91c-42ee-9fea-3f80d02f2f75?j=eyJ1Ij…> collected material identifying apparent child soldiers through wartime images and eulogies released by armed groups or relatives. This phenomenon warrants far closer investigation than they have received from the world’s media. Before the war, 50 per cent of Gaza’s population was under 18. Male fatalities disproportionately outnumber female fatalities in the 10–14 and 15–19 age groups, whereas the figures for children aged 0–4 and 5–9 show no comparable divergence. Evidence suggests that underage recruitment is a viable and increasingly likely explanation. <https://substack.com/redirect/e93e5541-d3c7-4bd7-8097-28fbe64c2de6?j=eyJ1Ij…> Please feel free to download and share this video, either here or <https://substack.com/redirect/4a67505f-2d16-43ff-bd3a-c5bab07a0f21?j=eyJ1Ij…> on X. The full scale of this child abuse remains undiscussed. This makes the unanswered questions more urgent. This Substack is reader-supported. Aviation Week :: U.S. Army Selects R66 Helo Offer From M1 For New Trainer

The selection for Flight School Next ends a two-year competition to replace the Airbus UH-72A Lakota light-twin helicopter as the Army’s initial entry rotary wing, following a short-lived tenure at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The Army selected the UH-72 to replace the Bell TH-67 Creek in 2016, citing the aircraft’s advanced cockpit and flight controls as an ideal platform to teach a new generation of pilots who also needed to be mission system operators. But the Army decided to reverse course two years ago and acquire a cheaper aircraft that could better hone a pilot’s flying skills. “Simply put, it delivers new military helicopter pilots with far better foundational skills,” said Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, commanding general of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence. “The fact that it delivers this increased capability at a significant long-term savings to our Army is a great added benefit.” The Army reduced the Flight School Next competition to three companies in April after eliminating a bid from Lockheed Martin. That left proposals by M1, another R66-based offer from an undisclosed company understood to be AAR, and a bid from Bell offering the 505 light-single helicopter. In addition to providing the aircraft, the Flight School Next program consolidates four different contracts associated with pilot training, including helicopter maintenance, simulators and classroom materials. M1, which already maintains about 500 aircraft at Fort Rucker, assembled a team comprised of General Dynamics Information Technology, Robinson, Quantum Helicopters and the University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation. <https://aviationweek.com/sites/default/files/styles/author_thumbnail/public…> Steve Trimble <https://aviationweek.com/author/steve-trimble> Email: steve.trimble(a)aviationweek.com <mailto:steve.trimble@aviationweek.com> Steve covers military aviation, missiles and space for the Aviation Week Network, based in Washington, DC.
