I just saw from WSJ that on September 28, 1945 (note:  1st post-war cycle), the House Naval Committee voted unanimously  to approve 1, 079 "fighting ships," including 116 aircraft carriers.  

Recalling my Pentagon tour, Reagan was POTUS, with John Lehman as SECNAV pushing for a 600 ship Navy.

Currently, I'm reading 11 CVs, 9 LHs, total 250 commissioned ships.

I sense a trend..
