I have to admit I was surprised (and entertained) by Kevin’s story. I would have thought that by the 90s our CRUDES leadership would have gotten on board with the idea of an embarked helo det, fully integrated into the ship. I was a JO in the mid 70s in the DESRON world when the Knoxs first started carrying the LAMPS 1. While I wasn’t personally onboard one, it became apparent to us that the addition of an embarked aircraft meant doing business differently - consideration in station assignment, the time allotted for launching, recovery, etc. - were all things the destroyer guys had to learn to employ the aircraft. Seemed to me that we did over time and I hope it’s second nature to us now, although I realize the practice now is to put all the 60Rs on the CV as a squadron and only temporality det them out to the small boys from the carrier. I hope we aren’t going backwards in CRUDES/HS integration. WARNING - EXTERNAL EMAIL This Email originated from outside of the organization. In our case, it was definitely aviator behavior. We had a lot to learn as a community about being helicopter carrier pilots and the HS guys aboard weren’t about to help. We were the new kids and had to earn our keep, which we later did, but I would call our situation unique. None of anything we experienced was ever really seen as intentional toward us by the CAG dudes. Just sort of growing pains we all had to get through. I believe HSM-74 still deploys with Lincoln and enjoys a solid relationship with CAG, at least compared to where we started back in the day. On a SWO note, I had a horrendous OIC experience aboard a cruiser that was much like what Kevin described. It was so absurd that I can’t even talk about it without sounding crazy. I will say that after being three steps ahead of the CO’s wife (a JAG officer he weaponized against us). After seeing him called to the carpet by the admiral, I can tell you there is nothing more satisfying than seeing your most junior Sailor tongue-bathed by the CO, XO, and CMC in public to avoid what would have been a very very messy and embarrassing discovery on his part. Outlook is mightier than the sword and the OICs most powerful tool and that is as much as I will say. Also, it helps that I was connected to a few JAG friends with a healthy distrust of NLSO San Diego leadership. Yes, people like me also know people and he learned the hard way with ever figuring it out. Apparently some of our SWO and VA brethren are not capable of thinking ahead. Heard'a getting wet? No, not that wet. What a bunch of bovine excrement. Penis envy, me thinks. "happy valley" Was not happy. The Captain at the time hated the air det and was busy mistreating them and wouldn't set flight quarters and a few times they even had to declare emergencies to get a green deck. Or so the story goes. One of the crews decided to fix that issue. NAG.. They did a pony run into Bahrain to get the mail. While there they asked the PC's if there were any old mail bags they could have. They did. Enterprising AW went outside and filled the wore out bags with dirt and rocks and anything to make them look full and then sink. As per usual they came back to the ship and the CO was in a mood and wouldn't give them a green deck. The aircraft told the ship if they didn't get a green deck they were throwing the mail out. No response so they went out in front of the bow and tossed the trashed mail bags.. "Green Deck" The CO was going to bring them up on charges for throwing out the mail until he found out that they hadn't and also discussed how if he did the investigation would indicate his actions towards the det. I wasn't there but some of the people involved were still there and related the story so either it is a good sea story and maybe some or mostly true. Having seen abuse between ships and air dets first hand on 2 different ships and been a party to fighting back I certainly could have happened. I did work ups for this 2006 deployment, but rotated to VTs before deployment. It doesn’t seem so long ago. I remember they would usually turn the lights and TACAN after they recovered the E-2 while we were still in starboard D. We would just laugh it off.
