Looking at the whole thing with my ancient causeways, well deck operations, and small boats eyes, it was not the smoothest of operations. The seas were not cooperating, building as time went on, the big rubber “porch” kept getting carried away because they were trying to attach it down-sea, and they were burning daylight late in the afternoon. I thought they were lucky to get the astronauts out of the capsule and off on the helos as quickly as they did.

And, of course, a clueless merchant steams through the area while the whole thing was going. So much for the NOTEMAR.

I may be just a dumb amphib guy, but I don’t see why they didn’t bring the LPD in and float the capsule into the well deck with the astronauts aboard and then let them step onto the deck directly. The four helo trips just seem like another step with complexity and risk.

And while on the subject, for those of us of a certain age, doesn’t it seem like we’re back to where we were 60 years ago, same script, different players and better sets, but were rebuilding muscle memory.

Looks like divers’ only job was to hook up the circular support and the front porch raft

Does anyone know why the divers weren’t put in the water via helo? It took forever for the boats to get out to the capsule. Way back when during Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, an H-3 arrived within seconds of the chutes leaving the capsule.
