Half Moon Bay drags, 1963, I raced my 40 Plymouth several times, then I raced my friend
Dave Hatchel's Mom's immaculate 58 Chevy [V8].
The 58, I get to the end of the track and no brakes [A/T transmission].
Had no choice but to spin it out.
They sent the ambulance down there, stop the races, all was OK.
Drove the car back to the pits, found there was no brake fluid in the master cylinder.
Cool, found some, filled it up, back to the starting line.
Andy Brizio was the flag starter.
Made another pass, get to the end of the track, no brakes AGAIN!
Spun it out again, whew, heart racing.
Ambulance/round 2.
"That's enough fellas."
Turns out one of the rubber brake hoses cracked and was wide open.
Two dumb kids, had no idea, Dave drove it all the way home to Daly City with no brakes.
Used the emergency brake.
That was pretty scary as well.
Later we were viewing some 8mm videos Dave took at the track in my downstairs
bedroom at my folk's house.
Mr.and Mrs. Hatchel were visiting my folks.
Mrs. Hatched l spotted her 58 on the video being raced!
She told Dave, "I told you not to race my car!"
He said "I didn't race it, Mike did." [I went by Mike back then].
Ha! Youth!
