Edward Kingsford was married to Henry Ford's first cousin. He developed and ran the Ford Factory in Iron Mountain on the upper Michigan Peninsula across its border with Wisconsin. Ford had forests up there and built the Ford Woodie's body there.Henry Ford was concerned with all the wood scraps and sawdust going to waste and they created briquets to make money off it. Wayne Yada and I visited Iron Mountain on our 2019 Woodie trip back from the Maine National Woodie Club show a few years ago.Got a tour inside the old Ford factory by one if the current tenants. They loved seeing Wayne's 1950 Ford Woodie. Ford's briquets reminded me of the Cal Cedar factory in Stockton that was one of my customers in 1975 while I worked for Union Oil Company. It was originally a pencil factory. A young manager was seeing all the wood shavings and sawdust going to waste. Cal Cedar bought wax from the Union Oil Company Bay area refinery at Rodeo and mixed it with the sawdust and wood shavings. Wrapped it in a heavy paper wrapper . . . it is now known as Duraflame logs. The instructions warn to not remove the wrapper. If you remember from Boy Scouts, a fire requires tinder, kindling and fuel logs. The paper wrapper is the tinder, the wax is the kindling that lights the sawdust & wood shaving that provide the fuel log.
