For the record, the pan has been on the car since it was built in the early 200s and has provided good service. It is an extremely low car and so that SBC sits low in the chassis, I normally catch or see in this case the raised up had steel section of the open pit at the oil changers, but did not actually see it and the employee did not pick up on it who was guiding me in over the pit….It would probably have cracked a steel pan in the same way it shocked my alm pan and cracked it…..so no giant hole but a crack which started leaking….Just part of running a low car……mgb From: lhofer@corvetteshopsandiego.com <lhofer@corvetteshopsandiego.com> Sent: Friday, January 30, 2026 3:01 PM To: don.kleine.vortex@gmail.com; 'Michael G. Don, Ray Smith was with a convoy of Over the Hill Gang members and we were actually going to the Oak Creek Rod Run (a bit south of Sedona). The year was 1978 and the group included Roy Chisolm, John Pickle, Norm Fletcher, Butch Whitley, Patti and me, and several others. As I recall, we "fixed" Ray's '38 Chevy by hammering a piece of wood in the hole in the oil pan and continued on to Oak Creek. Hillbilly engineering at it's finest! Hi Bill and Patty, Wow haven't heard from you in years. No didn't get the rod until 1980 so it had to be after 1983 or 4 when I was with Holly. Ray coasted the rest of the way down the mountain into an abandoned gas station then they wouldn't let us work there so we towed it to a underpass on 8 and repaired it there. Larry Hofer went back to Yuma and got a steel pan from a junkyard and oil towing the T-bucket behind his Barracuda in the pouring rain. El Cajon to Oak Creek never had a dry windshield and Roy and I were in roadsters. Fun memories. Mornin Bill; I am confused,, Ray broke his oil pan on two different occasions? That trip that Don was describing was memorable. It rained so much it filled my cylinders in my roadster with water. Needed to remove the spark plugs to get the water out of the cylinders. Didn't do any damage to the engine. We ran across some older guy (like you and me now) who had a really large collections of mid 40 and 50 and 60's cars in one of the mining warehouses, He let us in to look around. Was Kool Best to you and Patti. Larry, Well, I may be the one confused, but I have a bunch of pictures from Oak Creek dated 1978 with Smith and the others I mentioned, and it was raining pretty heavy in the pics. There was a fair amount of alcohol involved back in those days (the pictures document that also) and we three or four trips to Oak Creek so you're likely correct. I guess we'll need Ray to confirm the dates. Afternoon Bill; I was not back in San Diego till 1981 So it must have been on two different occasions? Or possibly a bit confused? May be he made it there successfully in the 1978 photos? Dons memories' are way more accurate than mine.. There was a fair amount of alcohol involved back in those days (the pictures document that also) and we three or four trips to Oak Creek so you're likely correct. I guess we'll need Ray to confirm the dates.
