SpaceX big boy has blown up more times than is allowable for manned flight....maybe some day Musk will get a ride on his own buggy. But that says nothing about the space capsule. the booster has nothing to do with landing the capsule. spaceX hasn't been out of orbit yet for all their flights, this baby is on its second and around the moon. Next time we will be lifting the lander prototype as well.. Perhaps you should read a little deeper in the funny papers! Ha Landing on pad, more than spaceX is doing that. Since NASA is paying for those trips to space station we have beneficiary of a cheaper ride. But when you have a couple booster strapped to main vehicle, why carry the extra weight while getting around the mechanical interference for the legs at this stage of program. h On 4/11/2026 18:33, Brian Miller wrote:
What seemed very stunning was the complete lack of innovation all the way around. SpaceX is landing rockets back on the pad and NASA basically gave grandpas old space ship a resto-mod using parts from other programs. It works. It looks cool, but not exactly the cutting edge of engineering from public dollars. They are very proud of their diversity however. The Navy did great, but the whole thing looked unnecessarily cumbersome.

So returning to Earth at 25k mph or Mach35+ you need a very large rocket engine to slow to parachute opening speed. Not too many choices beyond atmospheric drag.. So the chutes slow vehicle to about 17mph for touch down; but now winds may adjust touch down point beyond calculation before hand. It's a test flight and we got a big ocean. there will be plenty of time for nuance!
Hats off to those Navy divers getting the girdle on the fat lady. Apparently there are currents to contend with! And to the unseen workers gathering all the parachute stuff spread over many square miles before the fishing boat start roaming by!! Can-Do crowd at San Diego Naval Bases!! h On 4/11/2026 12:25, Michael Fuqua wrote:
I had the same thoughts. I hope the astronauts had barf bags! It all seemed rather rube goldberg to me. After such an amazing, imaginative, techologically incredible 10 days what we saw seemed right out of Apollo recoveries of the 1960s. Okay…but they gotta find a better way. Give the task to Elon….he would figure it out. :)

Indeed, I did catch in one small live shot the birds were from HSC-23 Wildcards at North Island. I cannot imagine how uncomfortable it must have been in that close capsule bobbing around so long before they even opened it up……..Obviousdly all a part of not loosing that capsule, bu It seems to me they could have easily skipped it all and just moved the Murtha in close and let them tow this whole deal into the well and be done with it. So both recovery helos were flying without the left pilot’s door which I am guessing watching them blow the fancy raft for the astronaut recovery was so the left seat could fly the approach and hold a hover over till one of the boat swimmers grabbed the horse collar…..good illustration of why the swimmer removes the pilot to be recued from their raft so they do not geet chased all over the ocean as was the case here…mgb */CDR Mike Brattland, USN (Ret.)mgbrattland@gerlecreek.com <mailto:mgbrattland@gerlecreek.com>/**//* */mgbrattland@brattland.org <mailto:mgbrattland@brattland.org>/* */Admin/Moderator SanDiegoCarGuys List & Calendar of Events/* */sandiegocarguys@brattland.org <mailto:sandiegocarguys@brattland.org>/* */619 454-0496 ’38 Willys 2 Dr Sedan/* */Webmaster for/**/www.brattland.org <http://www.brattland.org/>www.overthehillgang.com <http://www.overthehillgang.com/>/**//**/www.overdrivehotrodnews.com <http://www.overdrivehotrodnews.com/>/**/www.gerlecreek.org <http://www.gerlecreek.org/>/**/www.helobubbas.com <http://www.helobubbas.com/>/**//* */www.prowlers.org <http://www.prowlers.org/>/**//**/www.gerlecreek.com <http://www.gerlecreek.com/>/**//**/www.ford6vcarburetion.com <http://www.ford6vcarburetion.com/>/**//* */www.westcoastwillysclub.com <http://www.westcoastwillysclub.com/>_www.nssha.org <http://www.nssha.org/>_www.nhahistoricalsociety.org <http://www.nhahistoricalsociety.org/> https://sh60fhoas.nhahistoricalsociety.org/ <https://sh60fhoas.nhahistoricalsociety.org/>/* *//* *From:*ahaefner@aol.com<ahaefner@aol.com> *Sent:*Saturday, April 11, 2026 8:48 AM *To:*Jim Sr Sturges <jwsturges@gmail.com>; Marc Liebman <marc@marcliebman.com> *Cc:*HeloBubbas <helobubbas@helobubbas.com> *Subject:*[Helobubbas] Re: Artemis II landing And the number of boats and number of people in the boats looked like Saturday morning during whale watching season off of Pr Loma.

Does anyone know why the divers weren’t put in the water via helo? It took forever for the boats to get out to the capsule. Way back when during Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, an H-3 arrived within seconds of the chutes leaving the capsule.
