Indeed, I did catch in one small live shot the birds were from HSC-23 Wildcards at North Island. I cannot imagine how uncomfortable it must have been in that close capsule bobbing around so long before they even opened it up……..Obviousdly all a part of not loosing that capsule, bu It seems to me they could have easily skipped it all and just moved the Murtha in close and let them tow this whole deal into the well and be done with it. So both recovery helos were flying without the left pilot’s door which I am guessing watching them blow the fancy raft for the astronaut recovery was so the left seat could fly the approach and hold a hover over till one of the boat swimmers grabbed the horse collar…..good illustration of why the swimmer removes the pilot to be recued from their raft so they do not geet chased all over the ocean as was the case here…mgb CDR Mike Brattland, USN (Ret.) <mailto:mgbrattland@gerlecreek.com> mgbrattland@gerlecreek.com <mailto:mgbrattland@brattland.org> mgbrattland@brattland.org Admin/Moderator SanDiegoCarGuys List & Calendar of Events <mailto:sandiegocarguys@brattland.org> sandiegocarguys@brattland.org 619 454-0496 ’38 Willys 2 Dr Sedan Webmaster for <http://www.brattland.org/> www.brattland.org <http://www.overthehillgang.com/> www.overthehillgang.com <http://www.overdrivehotrodnews.com/> www.overdrivehotrodnews.com <http://www.gerlecreek.org/> www.gerlecreek.org <http://www.helobubbas.com/> www.helobubbas.com <http://www.prowlers.org/> www.prowlers.org <http://www.gerlecreek.com/> www.gerlecreek.com <http://www.ford6vcarburetion.com/> www.ford6vcarburetion.com <http://www.westcoastwillysclub.com/> www.westcoastwillysclub.com <http://www.nssha.org/> www.nssha.org <http://www.nhahistoricalsociety.org/> www.nhahistoricalsociety.org <https://sh60fhoas.nhahistoricalsociety.org/> https://sh60fhoas.nhahistoricalsociety.org/ From: ahaefner@aol.com <ahaefner@aol.com> Sent: Saturday, April 11, 2026 8:48 AM To: Jim Sr Sturges <jwsturges@gmail.com>; Marc Liebman <marc@marcliebman.com> Cc: HeloBubbas <helobubbas@helobubbas.com> Subject: [Helobubbas] Re: Artemis II landing And the number of boats and number of people in the boats looked like Saturday morning during whale watching season off of Pr Loma. Elon / Starlink uses boats. Helicopters have the advantage of mobility, but the splashdowns are so accurate, big stable boats with lots of room for divers work fine. Starship lands in the vast Indian Ocean but somehow the boats are right there. So returning to Earth at 25k mph or Mach35+ you need a very large rocket engine to slow to parachute opening speed. Not too many choices beyond atmospheric drag.. So the chutes slow vehicle to about 17mph for touch down; but now winds may adjust touch down point beyond calculation before hand. It's a test flight and we got a big ocean. there will be plenty of time for nuance! Hats off to those Navy divers getting the girdle on the fat lady. Apparently there are currents to contend with! And to the unseen workers gathering all the parachute stuff spread over many square miles before the fishing boat start roaming by!! I recall Apollo 17 as a faster Recovery although we had to steam to the Solomon Islands to find a spot to land the capsule. Here's a shot of HC-1 SH-3 Recovering the Astronauts. I do not recall boats in the water and according to this picture our USS Camden (AOE-2) was not "in the picture" although "Tico" certainly appreciated our services on the way home for a missed Christmas 1972. *Lou* On Sat, Apr 11, 2026 at 12:54 PM Harold Brattland <habrattland@arvig.net> wrote:

What seemed very stunning was the complete lack of innovation all the way around. SpaceX is landing rockets back on the pad and NASA basically gave grandpas old space ship a resto-mod using parts from other programs. It works. It looks cool, but not exactly the cutting edge of engineering from public dollars. They are very proud of their diversity however. The Navy did great, but the whole thing looked unnecessarily cumbersome. On Sat, Apr 11, 2026 at 3:54 PM Harold Brattland <habrattland@arvig.net> wrote:

SpaceX big boy has blown up more times than is allowable for manned flight....maybe some day Musk will get a ride on his own buggy. But that says nothing about the space capsule. the booster has nothing to do with landing the capsule. spaceX hasn't been out of orbit yet for all their flights, this baby is on its second and around the moon. Next time we will be lifting the lander prototype as well.. Perhaps you should read a little deeper in the funny papers! Ha Landing on pad, more than spaceX is doing that. Since NASA is paying for those trips to space station we have beneficiary of a cheaper ride. But when you have a couple booster strapped to main vehicle, why carry the extra weight while getting around the mechanical interference for the legs at this stage of program. h On 4/11/2026 18:33, Brian Miller wrote:

“Funny papers” really takes me back. Great memories. Anyhow, I decided to use my limited knowledge gained from the many, many space professionals, news agencies, and internet sites involved in both programs here in Central Florida. Then there was whatever I learned from the good folks at the KSC I visit from time to time. When SpaceX launched the first manned mission since the space shuttle, over 100,000 people packed the roads and waited hours to see it, myself included. I’m not sure why, but there was relatively limited excitement for Artemis compared to that. Like almost nobody was talking about it. I’m not sure what the turnout was since I was working, but the video my wife sent me from my driveway of the Artemis launch looked pretty cool. At least SpaceX didn’t have to go get the crew this time. I see it sort of the same way as an A320 vs. 737 discussion. To those in the back, the planes look exactly the same. Up front however, the A320 is vastly superior from an engineering perspective. Both get the job done, but one clearly demonstrates engineering prowess and innovation over the last 60 years while the other is essentially grandpas old Cadillac, but with a Garmin GPS unit plugged into the lighter and maybe power locks and key fob. Proven, safe and reliable, but enormously stale and uninspiring. Can’t judge it though, Soyuz is still hanging in there. As long as the US is back leading humanity into space, they can shoot them into space in a tin can for all I care. I just want it to succeed. Looking at the whole thing with my ancient causeways, well deck operations, and small boats eyes, it was not the smoothest of operations. The seas were not cooperating, building as time went on, the big rubber “porch” kept getting carried away because they were trying to attach it down-sea, and they were burning daylight late in the afternoon. I thought they were lucky to get the astronauts out of the capsule and off on the helos as quickly as they did. And, of course, a clueless merchant steams through the area while the whole thing was going. So much for the NOTEMAR. I may be just a dumb amphib guy, but I don’t see why they didn’t bring the LPD in and float the capsule into the well deck with the astronauts aboard and then let them step onto the deck directly. The four helo trips just seem like another step with complexity and risk. And while on the subject, for those of us of a certain age, doesn’t it seem like we’re back to where we were 60 years ago, same script, different players and better sets, but were rebuilding muscle memory.
